GHOST is an experimental reanalysis of tropical cyclone intensity from geostationary infrared imagery, developed at the University of Miami with the environmental predictors used in operational statistical guidance. It is independent of aircraft reconnaissance, so it gives a consistent estimate for every storm since 1980, including those never sampled by aircraft.
Storm labels and marker colors show the best-track intensity by default. Switch to GHOST to see the satellite-based estimate instead; the labels then show both (G for GHOST, kt for best track). A manuscript describing the method is in preparation. Treat the estimates as research output, not official intensities.
